There are many people that can be involved in your birth, like doctors, OBGYNs, midwives, nurses, doulas, etc. Differentiating between all the roles of birth workers can be confusing. A doula is usually someone you hire to attend you birth in addition to the care you have planned with an OBGYN or a midwife. This episode answers a listener question about the role a doula plays during your pregnancy and birth, and how they differ from an OBGYN and a midwife.

This episode focuses on breastfeeding challenges in the real world. These are issues that can be the hardest to overcome. These complex issues are seldom discussed and account for many of the reasons why women do not breastfeed or stop breastfeeding early. This episode features documentary filmmaker, Elizabeth Bayne. Elizabeth has spent the last few years in the trenches with expecting and new mothers learning about their struggles with breastfeeding in the real world. Although these issues can impact all mothers, minority communities tend to be the most heavily affected. Attitudes and biases towards new mothers in the minority community have an influence on breastfeeding rates. Family legacy and African American history are affecting attitudes towards breastfeeding today. In addition, economic barriers of lower income mothers can present additional challenges to breastfeeding. This episode prepares you for some of the real world social, economic, and cultural challenges you may encounter with breastfeeding.

Elizabeth Bayne is an award-winning producer, director and public health communicator whose work has garnered 2 CASE Awards, a Gold Davey Award, 7 Telly Awards, and a Best Short Competition Award. Earning her Masters of Public Health from the Yale School of Public Health and Masters of Fine Arts in film from the Art Center College of Design, Elizabeth is committed to working at the intersection of social impact and film. She is currently producing Chocolate Milk, her first feature documentary.

Pumping is a great way to provide breast milk to your baby when you cannot be there to breastfeed. This could be so you can run errands for a couple hours, enjoy a night out with girlfriends, or because you will be returning back to work after your maternity leave is over. Breast milk is often referred to as liquid gold, and it is. It is so valuable and amazing that it cannot be reproduced in a lab, only you can make it, and your milk is perfectly formulated for the needs of your baby. Hooking your boobs up to a machine to pump milk is pretty strange, but the fact that you can give your baby your own breast milk from a bottle is awesome. Pumping breast milk can really make a major difference for moms who need to be away from their baby during a short time and especially if you will be returning back to work at some point after the birth of your little one. This episode is focused on all the fundamental things you need to know about pumping breast milk.

We have become so addicted to ultrasounds, and there is so much information we can get from an ultrasound that we wouldn’t otherwise know.  This has a lot of benefits when we can catch something early, but in some cases, it can sound off alarms when they may not be needed. A placental lake is something that would only be discovered on an ultrasound. This episode covers what a placental lake is, some of the research behind placental lakes, and whether they can affect you and your baby.

If your newborn baby is placed on your abdomen after birth they will use their instincts and their senses to make their way up to your breast to initiate breastfeeding on their own. This is pretty incredible to see and it is fascinating to see just how instinctual breastfeeding is in a newborn baby. There are many steps involved in the breast crawl and each one affects you and your baby. There is also quite a bit of research on this topic. The big question is whether it is better to let your baby complete the breast crawl uninterrupted or to assist them in finding and latching on to your breast. Listen to this episode for information on what the breast crawl is, the instincts, senses, and steps involved in the breast crawl, and the evidence behind this behavior.

Prostaglandins are used in labor induction and help to ripen your cervix, meaning they cause it to efface or thin, and cause uterine contractions. There are two basic types of prostaglandins, misoprostol (known under the brand name Cytotec in the United States) and dinoprostone (which goes by the trade names Cervidil and Prepidil). Misoprostol was originally approved as a medication to prevent ulcers and in the United States is commonly used “off label” to induce labor. There is documented concern of risks associated with misoprostol (Cytotec) that primarily revolves around hyperstimulating the uterus. This Q&A answers a listener question about misoprostol (Cytotec) and includes evidence based information on the risks and benefits of misoprostol (Cytotec) to induce labor.

Breastfeeding is so important and one of the best things you can do for your baby.  There is no formula that comes close to mimicking breastmilk.  Your milk contains every vitamin, mineral, and nutritional element your baby needs, and your milk is customized just for your baby.  Babies who are breastfed are at a lower risk for ear infections, intestinal upsets, respiratory problems, allergies, dental problems, and their immune system will be stronger.  Breastfeeding produces prolactin and oxytocin, which are hormones that foster a connection to your baby and help you recover from birth better. Hear about the fundamental things you need to know before your baby is born and what to expect when they arrive and start breastfeeding. By understanding the basics you will have a solid foundation to start building a successful breastfeeding relationship with your new baby.

We all dream when we sleep. Sometimes people claim that they do not have dreams, and the truth is that they do, they just may not recall them. Pregnancy can add some new challenges to sleeping, and interruptions to sleep cycles, which can impact your recollection of dreams. The more you recall from your dreams the more vivid they may seem and the more details you remember. In addition, anxiety and stress during pregnancy, and even in the postpartum period, can impact our sleep quality, emotional state, and subconscious thoughts, and this can all have an effect on our dreams. Fortunately, there is quite a bit of research on dreaming during pregnancy that may help us to better understand pregnancy dreams. This episode answers a listener question about whether vivid dreams are common during pregnancy and what causes them.

Ideally your baby settles in a head down position in the third trimester. Some babies do not get into the head down position and are breech. A breech baby can present some challenges with a vaginal birth and unfortunately it has become common practice is U.S. hospitals to have a scheduled cesarean for a breech baby. Many moms who have a breech baby towards the end of their pregnancy will try all kinds of ideas to get their babies to flip. One of the popular methods is acupuncture, which is a key component of traditional Chinese medicine. When this practice is applied to a woman whose baby is breech, it involves an additional technique called moxibustion. In this practice, an herb is burned near a specific acupuncture point on your smallest toe. This is thought to help stimulate blood flow to your uterus and promote your baby getting in a head down position. This episode looks at the research and answers a listener question about how safe or how effective acupuncture is to reposition a baby.

Your blood type is something that is determined by your genes, and until you need a blood transfusion your blood type doesn’t really have any affect on your health. If you get a blood transfusion it is important to match the donors blood type with your blood type so your body does not reject it. Having Rh negative blood isn’t a concern until pregnancy. If you are Rh negative, and your baby is Rh positive then you have an Rh incompatibility. This means that there is a mismatch between the blood of you and the blood of your baby. When your Rh negative blood is exposed to your baby’s Rh positive blood, your blood reacts by producing antibodies that can attack and destroy your baby’s Rh positive blood cells. To avoid the complications that come along with this rho(D) immune globulin, commonly referred to by the brand name RhoGAM, is given at various points during your pregnancy or after birth. This episode explores all of the risks, benefits, and considerations surrounding Rh compatibility with your baby and the rho(D) immune globulin or RhoGAM shot.

It is common to have loose stools and a bowel movement shortly before your labor starts. This happens because your body releases prostaglandins that are going to help soften your cervix. Prostaglandins can also stimulate your bowels, which can cause loose stools or diarrhea. One theory is this helps empty your bowels prior to labor starting. What about having a bowel movement during your labor? For many expecting moms the thought of pooping during labor is terrifying and embarrassing, but it shouldn’t be. The truth is that it is not a big deal. This episode answers a question from a listener about pooping during labor, if it happens to everyone, and whether you can avoid it.
